Facts about Female Genital Mutilation

  1. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a procedure that involves the total or partial removal of the female external genitalia. This practice has no benefits whatsoever on the woman.
  2. FGM is an abuse against human rights. Even after been banned and seen as a criminal offense, some countries in Africa such as Nigeria, Somalia, Guinea still practice it.
  3. Around 4 million girls worldwide are at risk of going through FGM with most girls cut before the age of 15. Over 200 million girls alive today have been subjected to the act, according to data from 30 countries where popular data exist(WHO).
  4. FGM is a cultural or religious practice believed to prevents a girl child from been promiscuous or tame their sexual urge, and a rite to womanhood.
  5. FGM is a painful act that brings some much pain and complications to the woman. Complications could be short or long-term. These include;  infections such as tetanus, urinary problems, excess bleeding, swelling of the genital tissue, shock, death, depression, painful period, infertility, complications  during childbirth, sexual issues (painful sex, or no little to no urge for sex).
  6. High number of girls and women who have gone through this procedure and want it to end has significantly increased. 
  7. Despite been carried out by traditional healers within the community, health personnel are also involved in this criminal act. Around 1 in 3 adolescent girls (15-19 years) were cut by health personnel.
  8. Female genital mutilation is a crime against women and should never be encouraged. Community and health personnel sensitisation should be encouraged.
