The Sponge Mistake Experience

An average Nigerian bathroom settings have a sponge hanged around a corner mostly attached to the cistern pipe supplying water. Ordinarily, when I see a sponge hanged around the pipe or tube supplying water into the cistern, I or (some people) think the sponge is for washing the bathroom/toilet.

About a decade ago, I was washing a family's bathroom, being a visitor, I didn't know they don't have sponge or toilet brush for the bathroom (I wonder how they wash though). So, immediately I saw the sponge lying at the corner, I picked it up and scrubbed the living day out of the bathroom wall and toilet seat. Oh, I looked at the walls after I was done and I was proud of myself to have achieved the result cause of how it looked before.

Everyone praised me, but no one asked how I did it, which is okay I think. Few days later, The mummy of the house wanted to take her bath, but had to come out of the bathroom to do something in the living room, there she was, with the sponge I used to wash the bathroom days ago wrapped around her her neck.

I was shocked and confused and was hoping she had her sponge kept in the room everytime she takes her bath. After she was done bathing and to clear my doubt, I stood at the bathroom door waiting to see her leave with the sponge, to my surprise, she came out with just the towel tied around her chest.

I went to the bathroom touched the sponge, found out it was wet, called their last born and asked about the sponge, and he said it's for "mummy". I felt bad, but I couldn't tell her about it. But the thought of her using the sponge again turns my belly.

Today, same thing almost happened. This time around, I have a visitor who after seeing another sponge in the bathroom decided to use the one he saw there, but thought it wise to ask me about it before using.

I just told him it's for washing the toilet walls. My question is this, where should a toilet sponge be kept to avoid such unhygienic act again? Ever experienced this before, share your experience.
