How to Double Cleanse
Cleansing or washing with soap or cleanser and water is a known and essential skincare regime. While cleansing with plain soap and water helps rid the skin of dirt, double cleansing is another important skincare routine that thoroughly cleanses the skin of dirt, sweat, and makeup residue.
If you are unfamiliar with the word or unaware of its importance and benefit to the skin, take a seat, and let’s learn about it.
What is double cleansing?
Double cleansing is a popular skincare technique that involves using different types of cleansers- oil-based and water-based cleansers- to effectively remove makeup, dirt, sunscreen, and other impurities.
Why double cleanse?
The idea behind double cleansing is that the oil-based cleanser can penetrate the skin to
break down and remove makeup, sunscreen, and other oils on the skin. On the other hand, water-based cleansers can remove any remaining impurities and cleanse the skin more deeply. The technique involves two steps:
Step 1: Use an oil-based cleanser, cleansing oil, or balm, to dissolve makeup and other oil-based impurities. Apply a small amount of cleansing oil to dry skin. Gently massage the cleanser into your skin in a circular motion for a few minutes.
Step 2: Next, wet your face with warm water or wipe off with a warm damp cloth and then add a small amount of water-based cleansers, such as a foaming or cream cleanser, to remove any remaining dirt and impurities. Gently massage the cleanser into your skin, again using circular motions.
Rinse your face thoroughly with warm water to remove all traces of the oil and water-based cleansers. Pat your face with a clean towel.
Types of Water-based Cleansers
- Cleansing milk: This cleanser is typically formulated with oils or emollients that help gently cleanse the skin while providing hydration.
- Cleansing foam: This cleanser is typically formulated with foaming agents to gently cleanse the skin while providing a refreshing and invigorating feeling.
- Cleansing gel: This cleanser is typically formulated with a gel base to help gently cleanse the skin and offer a refreshing feeling.
Types of Oil-based Cleansers
There are popular cleansing oil brands and plant-based oils.
Popular Cleansing Oil
- Kose Softymo Deep Cleansing oil: It is an affordable option that effectively dissolves makeup and impurities while leaving the skin moisturized. As a lightweight oil, it is suitable for people with oily skin.
- DHC Deep Cleansing Oil: This cult-favorite oil is made with olive oil, rosemary leaf, and vitamin E to cleanse the skin and remove makeup gently. People with sensitive skin should choose this gentle oil.
- Shu Uemura Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil: This high-end oil is formulated with a blend of eight different oils to effectively cleanse the skin and leave it feeling smooth and nourished. This oil is heavy and more suitable for people with dry skin.
Popular Plant-based Oils
- Jojoba oil: This oil is very similar in composition to the skin’s sebum (natural oil), making it gentle and non-irritating for most skin types. It’s lightweight and easily absorbed.
- Grapeseed oil: This oil is also lightweight and absorbs quickly, making it an excellent option for oily or combination skin. It also contains antioxidants that can help protect the skin from free radicals.
- Sweet almond oil: This oil is rich in fatty acids, which can help to nourish and moisturize the skin. It’s also an excellent option for those with dry or sensitive skin, as it’s soothing and gentle.
- Olive oil: Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, making it an excellent option for sensitive or irritated skin. It’s also great for those with dry skin because it is very moisturizing.
Summary
Double cleansing is a two-step cleansing process involving both an oil-based cleanser and a water-based cleanser. It’s an effective way to remove makeup, sunscreen, and other oils on the skin while providing a deeper cleanse.
When double cleansing, it is essential to use gentle and non-irritating products, as the process can be pretty harsh on the skin, particularly when powerful ingredients are used. Ensure you gently massage the oil-based cleanser into the skin, as over-scrubbing can damage the skin’s protective barrier. Most importantly, be mindful of your skin type when choosing a cleansing oil or consult a dermatologist for a recommendation.
