5 Essential Skincare Regimens

Skincare regimens are treatments or care required for healthy and glowing skin. A skincare regimen requires consistency to achieve your desired results. Based on skin needs, conditions, and skin types, the regimen could be morning and night (twice a day) or once daily. Healthy skin requires consistency, the right products, and applying in the right order to achieve healthy skin. Skincare regimens include a cleanser, toner, treatments, moisturizer, serum, eye cream, and sunscreen. While these regimens are essential, here are essential regimens to treat and maintain healthy skin.

  1. Cleanser: Cleansers are formulated for the face and body to wash off dirt, excess oil, and pollutant on the skin. Cleansers can be liquid or solid. It should be mild and made for your skin type and skin condition. Cleansers with high pH are usually harsh and have tightening or pulling effects on the skin. They should be used twice a day in the morning and at night to wash off dirt accumulated on the skin during the day.
  2. Toner: Toners are mistaken as cleansers as it is used for cleaning dirt trapped within the skin, and dirt not thoroughly washed while cleansing. Alcohol-free toner can be organic rose water, chamomile, and witch hazel toner, and it's applied to balance the skin pH after taking your bath.  Some toners are formulated with other active ingredients such as lactic or glycolic acid for their hydrating and exfoliating properties and based on your skin's need. Some still don't see the need to use a toner. Toners are important in skincare regimens because they remove dirt within the skin, reduce oiliness, and reduce pore size. It is used in the morning and night after taking your bath.
  3. Serum: Serums could be oils or gels formulated with high-performance ingredients and antioxidants to treat a targeted skin condition or need. They are concentrated and light in weight to penetrate the skin quickly and hit their target site. Serums are applied after using a toner and before using a moisturizer because they are lighter than moisturizers. Some serums are multifunctional. Serums can brighten your skin, treat hyperpigmentation, and prevent aging. Depending on their functions, you can use them in the morning, but they are best used at night after taking your bath.
  4. Moisturizer: Moisturizers can be in the form of lotion, cream, butter, and oil. They are applied to the skin to retain moisture and hydrate the skin. Irrespective of your skin types, moisturizing is an essential regimen for healthy skin. Moisturizers are formulated with humectants, emollients, antioxidants, and active ingredients for your skin need. Moisturizers are applied after using a serum in the morning or when the skin is damp to lock in further moisture. Moisturizers such as butter or carrier oils are applied when the skin is wet to seal in moisture and hydrate the skin. You can use your moisturizer in the morning or at night, depending on the product's active ingredients.
  5. Sunscreen: Sunscreens are usually underrated, most especially people with dark skin tone. It s believed that high melanin production protects dark skin from the sun. All skin colors are not protected from the harmful rays of the sun. Sunny, raining or cloudy, sunscreens are to be applied on exposed areas such as the face, shoulders, feet, and hands. Use sunscreen based on your skin type, or use a hydrating sunscreen made for all skin types. Sunscreens are used after using your moisturizer or after applying a serum. Some sunscreens are applied after spending some hours in the sun, swimming, or when sweating. They are used during the day to protect and prevent wrinkles, fine lines, sunburn, and dark spots caused by excess exposure to sun rays.

Other regimens are essential, but some products are formulated to treat your skin conditions and care for your skin types without trying other regimens. Remember to choose hydrating products and are made for your skin types. The eye is the thinnest part of the skin; eye creams that are hydrating and have anti-aging properties should be gently applied around the eyes. Carrier oils or butter can be used instead of eye cream and is applied after using a toner or serum.
