What is a Menstrual Cup?

Menstrual cups are reusable sanitary products many women have found less stressful than other sanitary materials like pads and tampons. 

Menstrual cups are made of flexible materials like silicone and latex for ease of use, and they vary in size depending on choice. While some menstrual cups are disposable, a reusable one is durable for up to 10 years. 

Although expensive, it is a lifesaver for some women as they can use it without wearing panties during their menstrual period. 

The size of the cup is a major concern to some women who haven't used one before as they can't fathom how it will go into their vagina without irritating because of the size. 

How to Use a Menstrual Cup

1. The cup has a stem (the pointed end). If you want to insert it into your vagina, fold it properly and insert it into the vagina. Once it gets into your vagina, rotate it, and keep the stem outside the vagina. The stem is used during insertions removal. Once the cup gets into the vagina and after rotating or turning it, it automatically opens and sticks to the wall of the vagina to collect blood and prevent leakage. 
2. The menstrual cup can last 4 to 12 hours, depending on how heavy your flow is, but it requires consistent use and observation to know when to remove it. 
3. Removing the cup can sometimes be messy, but to avoid spillage, squat or sit and use your pelvic floor muscles to push the cup down and gently remove it using the stem. Pinch the base to break the seal and turn the cup back slightly to prevent spillage. 
4. If a menstrual cup is not fitted well, it can cause leakage. If you are using a menstrual cup, when going out, make sure you go with wipes or toilet paper to wipe the cup clean after removing and rinsing it with water. 
5. When you are done for the day, sterilize the cup in hot water.

Precaution: A menstrual cup can interfere with Intrauterine devices (IUD). Please speak with a gynecologist to be informed of any downside to its use.
