To celebrate this, the following are 5 important Facts you need to know about AIDS!

√ DO YOU KNOW? (FACT 1) 

AIDS is an abbreviation for 'Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome'.

It is a disease of the immune system characterized by increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections such as; pneumocystis carinii, pneumonia and candidiasis, certain cancers— as Kaposi's sarcoma, and neurological disorders.

Aids is caused by a retrovirus (HIV) and it's transmitted chiefly through the blood or blood products that go into the body's bloodstream, especially by sexual contact or contaminated hypodermic needles.

 

 ✓ DO YOU KNOW? (FACT 2 )

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was first recognized as a new disease in 1981 in the United States when increasing numbers of young homosexual men succumbed to unusual opportunistic infections and rare malignancies.

 

 √ DO YOU KNOW? (FACT 3)

ZIDOVUDINE, a medicine commonly known as AZT, was introduced in 1987 as the first treatment for HIV.

  

✓ DO YOU KNOW? (FACT 4)

HIV does NOT get transferred through Skin-to-skin contact, hugging, shaking hands, or water sharing, food or drinks, saliva, tears, or sweat(unless mixed with the blood of a person with HIV), sharing a toilet, towels, beddings, mosquito bites, other insects.

DISCRIMINATION KILLS FASTER THAN THE DISEASE ITSELF.
