Diagnostic Errors in Health Care System
I read a woman's story narrating how she went for antenatal in her second trimester only to be tested and told she had HIV.
According to her, she argued with the nurse but she eventually registered and was place on ARVs. She said she gave birth to her baby through caesarian, and her baby was also placed on drugs.
Months later, she met a friend who was a nurse at the hospital she was delivered of her chid, narrated her ordeal and the friend said she strongly believes she was not positive.
She went to another center, and redo the test only to find out that she was not possible (never been positive).
I have families that have been victims of diagnostic errors and I must say that it's not a pleasant experience to walk out from; that's if you are lucky enough to be alive to walk out from it.
According to studies, more than 400,000 patients in the US die from preventable harm, and an average patient in the US can be expected to be harmed by diagnostic error at some points.
Have you or someone you know experience diagnostic errors before? Please share your experience.
