Using Saliva as a Lubricant during Sex

Using Saliva as a Lubricant during Sex

Most of us probably took our sex lessons watching “Adults movies” and that simply stuck to our mind. One of the common unhealthy habits that I think we learn is using saliva as a lubricant during sex. To be honest I feel irritated when people say they use saliva in fact, lot of it to make penetration easier.

Come to think of it, apart from the disgust, using spit comes with a level of risk too. I know we may not fully agree with this, and you may be asking if not saliva, what then should we use? The answer is crystal clear, have enough foreplay to make you wet and use an approved lubricant like coconut oil, silicon or water-based lubricants like K-Y jelly.

Back to the main topic, using saliva can be risky for you, and here is why.

  1. Sexually transmitted infections: STIs in the throat or mouth can be transmitted to the genitals via saliva; this means that if your partner has STI such as Gonorrhea, and syphilis, when they rub their saliva on your genital, it put you at risk of getting infected too.
  2. Vagina Infection: Bacteria present in saliva are different from bacteria present in your vagina, when saliva is applied to your vagina, the bacteria from the saliva combines with the one in your vagina which causes an imbalance and upset your vaginal microbiome. This further lead to bacterial vaginosis or yeast infection. Believe me ladies; this infection can be pretty nasty.
  3.  Irritating: Can we all agree that this is simply irritating? Saliva does not have the necessary consistency to keep you feeling wet, it dries off quickly making you add more spit during the act. I don’t know about you, but this alone is a huge turn off for me!
