Five ways to get rid of underarm odour

The nose is a sensitive organ that can register a smell in your brain. A good smell leaves an impression on those you have contact with; if your smell doesn't leave a good impression, it can affect your confidence and interaction with people.

When you sweat and the microflora on your skin feed on salt, ammonia, and other compounds from your sweat, it produces body odour which can make you and does around you uncomfortable. While body odour is completely normal, your hygiene level can help control how bad it can be. Besides poor hygiene, the kind of food you eat (sulfur-rich food), medication, and underlying health conditions can cause an odour.

Irrespective of what's responsible for your underarm odour, here are things you need to do and routine to practice to help get rid of underarm odour.

Good Personal Hygiene

One of the major causes of underarm odour is poor hygiene. Most people feel comfortable taking their once a day, not thinking about the pollution and other things they came across during the day. You must have your bath two times a day, in the morning and at night, before going to bed. Bathing at night helps get rid of sweat and dirt accumulated during the day. While bathing, wash your underarm using a mild soap and enough water. Bushy armpits encourage bacteria growth as they tend to strive in a warm and moist area. Keep your armpit hair as low as possible by having a regular shave or trim.

Know your active Ingredients

People sometimes complain about using different products to get rid of the underarm smell without success. Before purchasing skincare products, most especially products targeted to get rid of odour, you need to look out for ingredients with antibacterial properties to help control your sweat and balance your skin pH. Examples of ingredients in skincare products are;

  • Neem plant.
  • Epsom salt
  • Activated charcoal
  • Coconut oil
  • Bentonite clay
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Peppermint essential oil.

These active ingredients have antimicrobial properties that have effectively help with underarm odour and reduce sweat.

Detoxification

Detoxification involves getting rid of or reducing toxins build up in the body. You can also detoxify your armpit to reduce the growth of bacteria. To detoxify, prepare a mask using natural ingredients such as neem powder, bentonite clay, activated charcoal, lemon, apple cider vinegar, and coconut oil. How to detoxify your underarm?

  1. Mix one tablespoon of bentonite clay with water / diluted apple cider vinegar to form a paste. Apply on your underarm and leave it on for 5-15 minutes before rinsing off. Apply cold-pressed coconut oil to moisturize your armpit. Do this two to three times a week.
  2. Mix one teaspoon of activated charcoal in coconut oil to form a paste. Apply on your underarm and leave it on for 10-30 minutes. Rinse off and pat dry with a towel.

Moisturize

Moisturizing the armpit with the right active ingredients prevents body odour, reduces sweat, and lightens the dark underarm when used consistently. Aside from using cold-pressed coconut oil as your moisturizer, applying stabilized aloe vera gel under the armpit before applying a roll-on or underarm spray prevents armpit odour. Ensure you moisturize your underarms daily.

Antiperspirants

Over- the-counter antiperspirants reduce sweat by limiting the amount of sweat released from your pore. Some of these antiperspirants contain alcohol that helps prevent sweat by stopping bacteria's growth. Apply an antiperspirant or deodorant on your underarms after having your bath in the morning and after moisturizing with stabilized aloe vera gel.
